Introduction

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has led to profound changes in our lives, imposing a series of challenges to the Unified Health Care System (SUS) and Desiderata Institute. We spent 2020 with the whole team working remotely and reorganized our activities to strengthen the health care system in the current scenario. At the same time, we re-evaluated our actions in the pediatric oncology and childhood obesity programmatic areas.

We took advantage of our collaboration history with public administrators and hospitals to join the União Rio Movement’s managing committee. This involved leading the technical validation, negotiation, procurement, and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPEs) for health workers in Rio de Janeiro public hospitals. Furthermore, we supported pediatric hospitals that admitted children with Covid-19. We also converted our face-to-face activities into online events and shared relevant content with caregivers and health professionals, correlating childhood cancer and childhood obesity with Covid-19.

Childhood obesity also gained relevance in this pandemic context. Children are at home more often and a significant number of them no longer have access to school meals and are more prone to sedentary behavior, since social distancing has increased their screen time. As a result, we carried out our first widespread campaign, presenting numbers and facts that prove that obesity in children and adolescents is a public health issue, not an individual one. For the first time, we signed an international partnership to implement advocacy strategies aimed at strengthening legislation on healthy environments for children and adolescents.

Bearing in mind how difficult it is to have a new routine imposed on us, and how painful the pandemic has been for thousands of families, I would like to present our 2020 activities and results. These have been achieved alongside our active advisors, partners, and a qualified team committed to improving public health care, especially for children and adolescents.

Good read!

Message from the Board

In 2020, Brazil and the world were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which overburdened health systems and abruptly transformed everyone's life. This unique moment in recent history presented challenges for families and organizations. At the same time, it made the importance of universal health care even more evident.

The Desiderata Institute quickly responded to this new scenario, adjusting its actions to make an effective contribution to the sudden pressure on hospitals in the Unified Health System (SUS) in Rio de Janeiro. This was done without neglecting the health needs of children and adolescents who, despite not being part of the Covid-19 risk group, continued to demand specialized attention, especially oncological cases. The rising food insecurity seen in this period also highlighted the urgency of effective measures to ensure healthy eating habits for children, which is essential for controlling childhood obesity.

Collective effort is an institutional value that permeates our actions and our commitment to health. To overcome the challenges of improving children’s health, we need to make permanent the solidarity and involvement of civil society organizations and society as a whole that characterized the year of 2020.

Lastly, the Nominating Committee comprised by the Deliberative Board actively searched for a new Chairperson over the year. As a result, they recommended the name of Mark Essle to replace me in this role, which I have held since our establishment in 2003. Mark was elected to the position in April 2021. I am convinced that the experience, talent and commitment of the new Board Chair will take the Desiderata Institute to the next level; toward our dream of having Brazilian children and adolescents among the healthiest in the world. As I send this message, I wish Mark success in his new mission.

About Desiderata

The Desiderata Institute is a Brazilian Civil Society Organization (CSO) focused on improving public health care for children and adolescents in Rio de Janeiro. For the past 17 years, we have been working on the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of childhood cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and risk factors, such as childhood obesity.

Our mission

Promote solutions that guarantee timely prevention, diagnosis, and care for the health of children and adolescents.

Our dream

Brazilian children and adolescents among the healthiest in the world.

Institutional Development

Institutional Communication

As a strategic axis of Desiderata, our institutional communication intersects with all areas of the institute. It creates content and campaigns that contribute to making children's health a priority topic in the discussion and establishment of public policies. It also works to strengthen the relationship with its partners in the health care field, and to make the organization better known to the general public and potential supporters, as well as to enhance its fundraising initiatives.

The year 2020 was marked by two main challenges: adapting to the new reality imposed by the coronavirus pandemic and the preparation, in collaboration with the Obesity area, for the institute's first campaign aimed at a broader audience.

In this context, it was essential to mobilize our team to produce content. The goal was to publish articles on our social media and in the press in order to reinforce the perception of the institute as a reference in children’s health, a channel between civil society and public authorities, and a reliable source for information and analysis.
