Covid-19
Logo União Rio

In the face of Covid-19, we took some actions that could mitigate the effects of the pandemic on Rio de Janeiro's public health care system.

We are members of União Rio, a volunteer movement in Rio de Janeiro that brings together civil society and non-governmental organizations to reduce the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Desiderata Institute is co-manager of the movement's health area, in charge of technical validation, procurement, and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) distribution. A total of 1,079,734 PPEs were donated to public hospitals that worked on the frontline against Covid in Rio de Janeiro.

We also collaborated with the União Rio Movement in the modernization and expansion of the Jesus Municipal Hospital’s ICU sector, opening 2 new pediatric beds, and acquiring a 24-hour monitoring center for all beds (10). Considered as strategic for children’s care in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, the Jesus Municipal Hospital has also become a reference in the municipal network for the hospitalization of children with Covid-19.

In addition to our collaboration with the União Rio Movement, we donated PPEs to hospitals known for providing care for childhood cancer patients. Since these hospitals were not on the frontline against Covid, they were not a priority in government actions. However, these hospitals care for children with chronic diseases, who belong to the risk group. We donated 124,160 PPEs, which are essential to ensure the safety of health professionals and pediatric patients.
