Panorama of Pediatric Oncology

The production of information on health is a commitment that must be taken on by all who want and work for efficient public healthcare. Finding consolidated information on pediatric oncology is a challenge. Nationally, there are two publications by the Instituto Nacional do Câncer on the subject: “Câncer na criança e no adolescente no Brasil (2008)” and “Incidência, mortalidade e morbidade hospitalar por câncer em crianças, adolescentes e adultos jovens no Brasil: informações dos registros de câncer e do sistema de mortalidade (2016).”

Since 2014, Instituto Desiderata works in partnership with the Fundação do Câncer and the
Instituto Nacional de Câncer with the goal of producing information that reveals the pediatric oncology scenario in Rio de Janeiro. Since the first “Panorama of Pediatric Oncology” bulletin, we have monitored data such as incidence, mortality, care in qualified hospitals or with service in pediatric oncology, hospitals with a Hospital Cancer Registry, waiting time, registry quality, and staging.

Instituto Desiderata, in pursuing the effective implementation of public policies that expand early diagnosis and quality treatment, also takes on the commitment of contributing to the dissemination and transparency of information, understanding its importance both in the work routine, allowing for the review of care practices, and in the strategic planning of policies and actions. The quality of information is intrinsically related to its use, therefore, we consider it necessary for health professionals, patients, caregivers, and researchers to use this information in their professional practice.
